The BBC Performing Arts Fund is a charity that was set up within the BBC in 2003 to help everyone achieve their musical ambitions, from choirs, hip hop artists and musical theatre performers to folk musicians. We have restarted rehearsals after the Easter break at Central Hall, Tollcross, EH3 9BP: 730pm for our Summer Concert. The concert is on Sat 16 June, 730pm at Marchmont St Giles Church 1A Kilgraston Road, Edinburgh, EH9 2DW). It will have an Italian flavour -
Our winter concert took place on Saturday 21 January 2012 at Marchmont St Giles Church. This included Pergolesi's Magnificat, excerpts from Mozart's The Magic Flute, Purcell's Anthem My Beloved Spake and works by Gounod, Franck and Arcadelt. Due to the generosity of an anonymous benfactor we were accompanied by a small orchestra. We had a "SingAlongAChristmasCarol Evening on Tuesday 13 December in Marchmont St Giles Church Hall with mince pies and refreshments - a chance for our friends and supporters to join the choir and sing some old and new favourites with them. Our Summer Concert was on Saturday 28 May 2011: FRENCH IMPRESSIONS: Bizet, Faure, Franck, Durufle, Saint-Saens, Debussy - Marchmont St Giles Church, Kilgraston Road. A French sacred and secular evening. Our Winter Concert due to be on Saturday 4 December 2010 was held on Saturday 22 January 2011 becuse of the adverse weather conditions. Music included Haydn's St Nicholas Mass, Vivaldi's Magnificat and Purcell's "Bell" Anthem Rejoice in the Lord Always. Our 29 May 2010 concert under our new MD Robert Parsons included Mozart's K220 C major "Sparrow" Mass, Purcell's 1694 "Ode on Queen Mary's Birthday - Come ye sons of art", Stanford's Te Deum along with other works.

We had a mixture of sacred and secular songs appropriate to the season with an opportunity for the audience to join in favourite carols. Admission was free. We also performed at the Royal Overseas League and Marks & Spencers on Princes Street - we collected for Shelter during the latter. The first of our winter concerts was on Saturday 21 Movember: 730pm at Marchmont-St Giles Church of Scotland. "Entente Cordiale" was a joint concert with the Edinburgh Orchestral Ensemble. The evening's conductor was Raphael Mollaret who recently founded the Ensemble and who joined the Phoenix Singers in September as our MD. The Choir sang Faure's Pavanne and Cantique de Jean Racine and Elgars From the Bavarian Highlands. The orchestra performed Beethoven's overture Coriolan and Vaughan-Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves. Our Summer Concert 2009 was on Saturday 9 May, 730pm at Marchmont -St Giles Church. We sang Handel's Foundling Hospital Anthem and Mozart's Missa Brevis in D minor. We said goodbye to our MD Tom Edwards whose musical career continues as Director of Music at Lucton School in Herefordshire after the summer. Admission was free (although contributions were gratefully received - a good quotation from our MD is "One thing I have learnt is that you put money in and music comes out, profit is an almost unheard-of commodity!" The first of our winter concerts was held on Saturday 15 November 2008 in Marchmont-St Giles Church of Scotland, Strathearn Road. Vivaldi's Gloria constituted the first half. The second half started with Scots songs from the choir followed by a selection of Sullivan songs from our soloists. Choir and soloists rounded off the concert with pieces from the Mikado. Our Musical Director, Tom Edwards conducted. This was our last concert with our accompanist, Ekaterina Belik who is leaving us to pursue her studies. Our Summer Concert 2008 which included Music by Goss, Ireland, Faure and Somervell was at Morningside Parish Church , Braid Road, Edinburgh on Sat 31 May 730pm. Musical Director: Mr Tom Edwards Accompanist: Ekaterina Belik Our Winter 2007 Concert took place on Saturday 8 December in Marchmont-St Giles Chrurch, Kilhgraston Road, Edinburgh. We said goodbye to Andrew Lees as Musical Director. We welcomed our new accompanist, Ekaterina Belik, who joined us in September, to her first concert with us. Our 2007 summer concert "A Maytime Musical Miscellany" was on Saturday 26th May 2007 at 730pm at Marchmont St Giles, Kilgraston Road. Conducted by our Musical Director Andrew Lees. Accompanist Karen Richmond was with us for the last time before she set off to London to continue her music studies. This follows 'A Pastoral Chrismas' sung on 9 Dec 2006 at Marchmont St Giles, Kilgraston Road. Our last concert of 2005/2006 was on Saturday 10 June 2006 at 730pm: St Mark's Unitarian Church, Castle Terrace. The Strains of Monarchy - music with a Royal theme from Handel to Gilbert & Sullivan. An Ode to Eros, was on Saturday 11 February 2006: 730pm: St Mark's Unitarian Church, Castle Terrace. With our new Musical Director Andrew Lees, Accompanist Karen Richmond. Our 2005 winter concert took place at St Cuthbert's Church, West End, Edinburgh: Saturday 29 Oct: 730pm. Songs for All Saints. Guest Conductor - Scott Harrison; Accompanist - Karen Richmond. Our 2004/2005 season ended with a performance of Mozart's Requiem in Marchmont-St Giles Church.
Our 2004 Christmas concert took place in Marchmont St Giles Church on Saturday 11 December. We performed several works by John Rutter as well as works ranging from Cesar Franck's Panis Angelicus to Bruckner's Gradual for the Dedication of a Church: Locus Iste. Our Musical Director, Ewan Armstrong, coducted and the Organist was Ruaraidh Sutherland. Karen Richmond, our rehearsal accompaniest sang O Holy Night (Christmas Song) by Adolphe Adam Arr. John Grady. Archie Minto sang Rest and be Thankful - a song specially composed for the ocassion by our Musical Director Ewan Armstrong. Margaret Aird sang Walking in the Air by Howard Blake. The audience joined in singing the well known Christmas carols that formed the framework of the concert. Our summer concert "SUMMERTIME" on 11 June 2004 concentrated on Gershwin and Copeland. It was at the Braid Centre, Nile Grove, Morningside. Regretfully it was the last concert of our Musical Director, Scott Harrison, who had been with us from the beginning in 2001. Ewan Armstrong, recently graduated from Edinburgh University takes over in September. We wish Scott well in his continuing career at Telford College. It was also our last evening with Suzanne Harvey who has been our accompanist since Sept 2003. Suzanne is spending the next year concentrating on her music studies - every success with these. As well at the choir pieces, we had solo pieces from choir members Ann MacKenzie, Angela Taylor and Jane Page. First of our guest singers was Helen Bruce (our previous accompanist) who returned to sing five songs by Samuel Barber with Karen Richmond accompanying. Jamieson Sutherland accompanied by Wilfrid Treasure sang two songs by Aoorn Copeland. We held our 2003 Christmas Concert in Marchmont St Giles Church on 12th December and we repeated it at Astley Ainslie Hospital the following Tuesday for the patients. Our winter concert was in St Cuthbert's, Princes Street Gardens on 31 January when we sang Vivaldi's Gloria and Gounod's Messe Sonnelle de Ste Cecile.
We concluded 2002-2003 with a "Summer Serenade" in St Peter's Episcopal Church, Lutton Pace on 13th June. The programme started with Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan-Williams with Ivor Klayman as soloist and Helen Bruce accompanying. Edward Sutton then played Elgar's Chanson de Matin on the organ and the first half finished with Serenade to Music by Vaughan-Williams. After the interval, Edward Sutton played part of Francois Couperin's Messe pour les Convents on the organ. The programme concluded with Schubert's Mass in C Major: Soloists Helen McIntosh and Jane Page (Sopranoes), Helen Bruce (Contralto), James Hutchison (Tenor) and Ivor Klayman (Bass). Musical Director Scott Harrison conducted. This was Helen's last evening with the choir. She had just concluded her music studies at Edinburgh Universiy and is now doing a post-graduate vocal training course at Guildhall School of Music and drama, London. This is us performing in St Cuthbert's Church in 2002.
